Strategies of the Pedestrian Precincts Planning in the City Centres of Germany: Freiburg as Case Study

Abstract:

Pedestrian precincts planning are alway seen as a part of shopping centre. This paper tries to refute the view with the lessons from German cities. Pedestrian precincts planning, as a vital urban planning strategy, should be integrated into the city centres and urban transport planning. Success of pedestrian precincts planning not only takes into account the good combination with preservation of city history, improvement of public spaces and commercial boom, but also depends on a series of sustainable green transport measures. Freiburg is an outstanding example of pedestrianization city that is already introducing the green transport system for the humanistic, ecological city centers.
